Supported Entry and Important Reminders

Sunday, September 13th, 2020

It was great to welcome you and your family back to Parkview P.S.! We thank you for your support of our reopening plans and look forward to seeing your child again this week on Monday or Tuesday.  Educators have been focusing on new health and safety protocols at Parkview including movement in learning spaces that provide the most physical distancing possible, hand hygiene, and proper ways to don and doff a mask/face covering. We ask that families continue to have discussions about the importance of proper hand hygiene and maintaining physical distance as much as possible while inside and outside the building.  While outside at recess, students have been designated areas to play in  cohort groupings. We ask that families speak to their children about keeping hands off and maintaining space.

Supported Entry: We are excited to welcome cohorts of our Year 1 FDK learners this week!  Please refer to emails that you have received and note your child’s entry information.

A reminder that on Monday, September 14th we will again see students with the last names A-L at school only.  On Tuesday, September 15th we will see students with last names M-Z only.

Please note that students (SK – Grade 8) (all students) will attend Parkview starting Wednesday, September 16th.  Students in JK will continue to attend this week in their cohorts until Friday, September 18th when all FDK Year 1 students are welcome to attend!

Bus tags:  If your child takes a bus to school, they have received a plastic tag on their backpack that identifies important information related to their transportation.  Please review this with your child and ensure the tags remain on their backpack.

Student Arrival and Dismissal:  Students should NOT be arriving to school prior to 8:15am, after school students should be going straight home as our school play structures are closed. As soon as possible, we ask that parents/guardians complete  Dismissal Google Form that was shared in the Parkview P.S. Parent Handbook last week.  We require a completed form for every child attending Parkview.

Mask Folding:  Families may find the following video helpful as it goes over how to safely don, doff and store a mask during a mask break.  It also reviews the importance of ensuring hands are clean before masks are put on or taken off.

Emergency Contact Information:  We require updated contact information for each child at Parkview P.S.  Parents must provide accurate and up-to-date emergency contact information to the main office as soon as possible, including individuals authorized to pick up your child from school.  Index cards have been sent home for review, please ensure the information you provide is accurate.

Each family must have a plan should their child become ill and needs to be picked up.

Visitors:  An important reminder to our community that visitors are not allowed in the building.  Please contact the school by phone or email.  If you are dropping your child off or picking your child up, we ask that you please ring the buzzer at the front door and Parkview staff will sign your child in and ensure their safe arrival to their classroom.

Please ensure you continue to screen your child every morning before their arrival at school.

Message from Our Trustee
As we begin a rather different start to the school year, I want to take this opportunity to welcome all new and returning students and families. Whether you are returning to school in person or participating in remote, online learning, we look forward to welcoming you into safe, inclusive and engaging learning spaces.

Staff members have been working hard over the summer months with the Ministry of Education and public health experts to develop a reopening plan that prioritizes the health, safety and well-being of our students and ensures that important health and safety measures are in place.

Please know that whatever learning model you chose, we will continue to provide your children with high quality education, and to support their learning, achievement and well-being. Our school staff are prepared to help your child transition back into our learning environments, and we will continue to partner with families to support your child’s success.

We know that families have many questions about what to expect as their children return to school. You can find information about what to expect at the start of the school year on the Board website, including frequently asked questions that you may find helpful at www.yrdsb.ca/school-reopening

As your school board trustee, it is my role to advocate for quality public education in York Region, and to ensure that our students remain at the centre of all of our decision making. The Board of Trustees makes policy and budget decisions, and communicates with the public, among other responsibilities

We are also responsible for setting direction for the school board, through our Multi-Year Strategic Plan. This plan sets out four priorities: Foster Well-Being and Mental Health, Build Collaborative Relationships, Champion Equity and Inclusivity, and Empower Ethical Leadership.

The relationship that we have with families is important, and I will continue to keep you informed of our work and priorities. You can also find the message from the Chair of the Board on the Board’s website. You are welcome to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

I hope you have a great start to the school year and wish you a happy, healthy and successful year ahead.

Ron Lynn
Trustee, Markham Wards 2, 3 & 6
