A Message From Your Administrative Team
We hope that you and your loved ones are safe and healthy. Thank you to all our families for your ongoing support this year.
Our last council meeting for the 2020-21 school year took place on June 7th, 2021. Thank you to all our School Council chairs Ms. Ho and Ms. Liang for organizing our meetings and all our council members for all their hard work, dedication and support. Despite the challenging year, our council has supported our community with arranging various events such as our PRO Grant Session, Indigo initiative and our Snack program.
Our staff have been working very hard to support our students with virtual learning while schools remain closed for the remainder of the year. Thank you to our caretaking team who have been working hard to ensure that our school grounds remain safe and inviting. Thank you to our students for remaining positive and demonstrating resiliency, we are so proud of them!

Our Chapter’s Indigo Fundraiser continues. If you would like to purchase a gift card to support purchasing titles for the school please send the gift card number or a PDF of the gift card to our teacher librarian kristin.vikse@yrdsb.ca . Gift cards can be purchased through our Parkview Indigo Page.

Student Absences
Please continue to report your child’s absence using Inform. The office will continue to follow up on absences during online learning.

It is important that we all stay home and continue to follow Public Health guidelines in order to curb the spread of COVID 19 in order to protect one another. It has been a challenging year and we thank you for your continued support and flexibility.

Support from Markham Public Library
Programming staff have created grade specific worksheets which can be requested here. Families can fill out the form for the desired grade and the library will email grade specific worksheets that can help supplement learning. 2021 Summer Learning Programs Available
During the month of July, YRDSB continues to offer credit and non-credit summer school program opportunities for elementary, secondary and adult students.
Traditional in-class face-to-face summer programs will move to a remote learning delivery model.

June is….
June is Pride Month around the globe. It’s a time that many people in the 2SLGBTQ+ community (Two Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, and additional identities) reflect on the leaders and activism of our past and present, along with the future we are working to create.
The recognition of Pride Month has roots in the events that occurred in New York City in June of 1969 at the Stonewall Inn. The history of this event is rooted in decades of 2SLGBTQ+ activism responding to police brutality, unjust laws that limited gender expression, and other laws that targeted the 2SLGBTQ+ community. It is important that we remember that many of the leaders of the Stonewall movement were trans women of colour and marginalized youth. The 2SLGBTQ+ community’s activism has continued to create supportive environments that benefit all communities. Our YRDSB students often discuss in GSAs (Gender and Sexuality Alliances) how we can create intersectional, inclusive, and welcoming environments for all.
National Indigenous History Month
This year, National Indigenous History Month begins during a time when many in Canada are focused on the recent discoveries of a mass grave at a former Residential School in Kamloops British Columbia. Examining the truths of Canada’s colonial past is important work and should continue to drive our examination of bias and what Canadian history has tried to keep hidden for so long. The importance, however, of continuing to uplift and affirm Indigenous identities while including positive representations must not be pushed aside in the process. National Indigenous History month is a time to celebrate the diverse cultures of First Nations, Métis and Inuit communities, as opposed to focusing on what has been done to them.
The Canadian Government unanimously declared June as National Indigenous History Month in 2009 through a motion in the House of Commons. The month, which includes National Indigenous Peoples Day, is a perfect time to reflect upon the long relationship between the many different Indigenous peoples of Turtle Island and Canadians throughout history. For students and teachers, it is a good time to become better acquainted with the different First Peoples who share this land with us.
