March 21-25

We hope you and your family have a wonderful March Break.  Looking forward to seeing our staff and students back on Monday, March 21, 2022.

Graduation Ceremonies

We are pleased to share with you that we will be holding in-person graduation ceremonies in June 2022. This decision was made in consultation with York Region Public Health. We recognize how important graduation ceremonies are for our students and their families, and we look forward to celebrating this exciting and important milestone.  At the same time, we will continue to work with public health and prioritize the health and safety of our students, staff and families in our planning. We appreciate that you may have many questions about the graduation ceremonies. We will continue to share information and updates with you as guidance is provided by the Ministry of Education and York Region Public Health.

GAPPS Profile Images

YRDSB does not tolerate any forms of hate or discrimination. In the last school year, it came to the Board’s attention that YRDSB Google Apps (GAPPS) profile pictures were being used to spread online hate through racist imagery shared and uploaded to GAPPS accounts. These images cause pain and can make other students and staff members feel unsafe, marginalized and unwelcome in our learning environments.

Appropriate actions were taken to address this issue, including a mandatory learning series for all students, mandatory training for all YRDSB staff, and temporarily removing access to customizing profile images. YRDSB will be continuing to implement measures that support student safety over the course of this school year.  These measures include providing teachers with ongoing access to resources and support for addressing issues of hate.

Between March 28-31, 2022, students will have opportunities to customize their profile pictures within parameters established by the YRDSB.  This will enable students to express or represent themselves in their profile images, while prioritizing safe and inclusive learning and working environments for all of our students and staff.

What does this mean for my child?

  • Students will have an opportunity in March to select a customized profile picture that meets YRDSB guidelines.
  • Students will receive guidelines and considerations based on their grade level to support them in selecting and/or creating an appropriate profile picture.
  • This is optional. Students who do not select an image will continue to have their first initial as their GAPPS profile image.
  • In future years, students will have two opportunities each year, during the fall and again in the spring, to change their images.

Students are also encouraged to report problematic images that perpetuate hate or cause harm by speaking with a caring adult or by making use of the YRDSB’s ReportIT tool

Parking/Drop-off/Pick-up

Parents/guardians who are driving to school should review the map below.

  • Parents/guardians should not be stopping on the street (dotted red line on the map) where stopping is NOT permitted and letting their children out, this is unsafe and it blocks traffic.
  • Parents/guardians should NOT park in the school parking lot or bus loop. The parking lot is for staff parking only.
  • Parents/guardians should NOT be parking where there is a solid red line on the map during drop-off or pick-up
  • When dropping off in the loop it is important that you pull up to the front and drive slowly and remain patient as we ensure student safety.

Daily Screening Reminder

Thank you for your ongoing support. Keeping Parkview safe is a shared responsibility. It is important that each morning, families:

  1. Screen your child prior to sending them to school using the Covid School & Childcare Screening Tool.
  2. If your child is at home due to illness, please ensure that you follow the isolation guidelines outlined by Public Health before sending them back to the school. Please inform the school if your child is displaying Covid Symptoms. Students will be permitted to return once isolation has been completed along with a School Attestation Form.
  3. Please do NOT send your child to school if they are feeling sick or are displaying symptoms related to COVID 19.

Mental Health Supports Available Regarding News of Global Conflicts

As events have unfolded in Ukraine over the past days and weeks, we are aware that many individuals in our YRDSB community, including students, families, and staff, have close ties to that country through heritage or family connections. Our thoughts are with those affected by this event and other instances of armed conflict throughout the world.  These events coupled with the effects of the global pandemic, may be affecting children in different ways. Resources are available to support you and your child in dealing with these issues.

School Mental Health Ontario has prepared information for parents on this topic. In addition, our Board’s Psychology and Social Work teams have created tips for parents on how to navigate conversations after traumatic events are available on the Board’s website.
